What is Cash for Candy?
From November 3-7, during business hours, children ages 12 and under can bring in their candy and receive $3.00 per pound in return. Doctor Hokmabadi and Total Health Dental Care will double the amount and make a charitable gift to Children’s Hospital Oakland.
It’s a win-win-win-win proposition.
Families win by talking about good nutrition
Food is medicine. And the better you eat, the better you feel, look, and think. It can mean no gum disease or tooth decay, less inflammation, lower chance of chronic disease and a world of other benefits.
Candy is, needless to say, far from nutritious. With its preservatives, food dyes, chemicals and unpronounceable ingredients, it doesn’t do the body good. Now, we’re not saying kids have to abstain altogether. Moderation is key. But understanding what’s in your food is the first step towards smart, healthy food choices. So talking about it is a good first step. Reducing intake naturally follows.
Children win by learning about food, money and generosity.
Even knowing that there are more nutritious foods than candy, it might be difficult for some kids to understand why they’re giving away their precious stash. But we’ve found most children get excited to receive the cash, particularly if their parents have talked about what it can buy them.
Even better, the majority of kids are really proud to help other kids in need. We have run this program for five years most parents have great conversations with their kids about giving to those less fortunate. It’s quite inspiring.
The Kids at Children’s Hospital Oakland Win
Talking about the value of free candy pales in comparison to talking about life and death, sickness and health. Unfortunately, too many of our young friends at Children’s Hospital won’t be out trick-or-treating this year. But we think they deserve to be healthy and happy, too.
Over the years, we’ve given close to $5000 so kids can feel a little bit better. Our donations have funded blankets, crayons, toys, stuffed animals, clothes and more. And we couldn’t be happier to play a part in our community’s well being.
Your Win is Our Win
We run the Cash for Candy program for the families in our community who believe in the benefits of healthy eating, smart choices and helping others. And we do it to help the patients at Children’s Hospital Oakland. It feels good to help others feel good. For us, that’s a big win.
So take the opportunity to talk with your children about the poor nutritional value of candy and the consequences of overindulging. Encourage them to donate their candy, help other kids, and get some cash in return.
