Close Gaps Left by Missing Teeth
A missing tooth, or several missing teeth, can greatly diminish the attractiveness of a smile. Gaps between teeth may also trigger functional problems if the remaining teeth begin to shift around in the mouth. As whole person dentists, we understand this could lead to compromised immune system, diminished self-esteem and less confidence.
Fortunately, dental bridges, offered at our Oakland practice and Berkeley practice, are an excellent tooth replacement option to restore function and beauty to the smile and reduce the risk of complications caused by gaps. Benefits of Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are an excellent restoration option for several reasons: they feel and look as good as natural teeth, and last for many years with the proper care and maintenance. By filling in gaps, dental bridges create a uniform set of teeth and an even smile, which may increase self image and confidence levels. Placing a dental bridge also reduces the risk of complications that gaps between the teeth can cause. For example, when a tooth falls out, the remaining teeth may shift around in the mouth, causing bite problems, TMJ disorder, or problems with speech. Some other problems that dental bridges can prevent include periodontal disease, tooth decay, and even bone loss.
What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a restoration made up of a prosthetic tooth with a dental crown flanking either side. The prosthetic tooth fits into the gap left by a missing tooth, and the crowns attach to the surrounding teeth. The surrounding, supporting teeth may be natural, implants, or both.
Placing Dental Bridges
The surrounding teeth on either side of the gap must be prepared prior to the placement of the dental bridge; this may involve removing a small bit of tooth structure to make room for the crowns. Impressions of the area will be taken to use for the design and fabrication of the dental bridge. Once the bridge is crafted, the false tooth will be placed in the gap, and the surrounding crowns will be slipped over the teeth on either side of the gap. A strong bonding solution will be applied to ensure a snug fit, and the dental bridge will be polished.
